Pivovar Velkorybnický Hastrman, Velký Rybník

Roughly 8 km east of Karlovy Vary sits the lakeside village of Velký Rybník, home to Pivovar Velkorybnický Hastrman. Trains arrive from Karlovy Vary three times daily (09:00, 15:30, 19:44, last return at 20:20), a 15 minute walk through town to Hastrman. If you choose the early bus arrival you will have a short wait for opening hours, though you probably won’t be alone.

As always, check bahn.de for timetables throughout Europe, not only within Germany.

Hastrman opened in 2005 and until recently Velký Rybník was the only place to find their beer. By late 2011 I was seeing their name on special draft lists in Prague. Even so, their Světlý Ležák 12° (pictured below) remains their most-rated beer with 13 reviews total (as of April 2013).

There were five draft beers available on my visit (October 2009), representing well the spectrum of Czech styles – svetly at 11° and 12°, polotmavy, tmavy and pšenice:

  • Polotmavý Speciál 13°
  • Světlý Ležák 12°
  • Česká Klasika Světlý Ležák 11°
  • Tmavý Ležák 12°
  • Staročeské Bílé Pivo – unfiltered pšenice (wheat beer)

This is not a large brewing operation; much more a restaurant that brews their own beer as they would bake their own bread. The system is not much more than a homebrew setup in a back room; lagering vessels were not seen but I would guess there is ample storage space if they are offering a full range of beers on tap and in bottles to-go.
